You need to spend some time researching what professionals use daily for specific tasks (computer, software, tools) and look into the process they use to get there (research, inspiration, mood boards, sketching). I didn’t use my graphic design degree to draw my DnD crew the other day, and I didn’t use my illustration skills to create a poster advertising a new learning center for a college two weeks ago. They do empower each other certainly, and there may be overlap of the two, but they remain separate activities the vast majority of the time. I say that as a person who went into a degree in graphic design because I illustrate. Illustration and Graphic Design are separate skills. You really want something that makes sense to stick an external drive into, and while iPads can, again, they weren’t built to accommodate that conveniently. This comes with the territory of this field. iPads are not optimized for storing large files, and numerous amounts of them. Even using my laptop when I work away from home is a pain in comparison to my desktop. ![]() Crushing them into submenus upon submenus to the point that it would fit on a tablet screen would render workflow to non-existence. The software used is vast and has lots of tools and settings. Even the biggest iPad will not afford you the retail space you need to do actual graphic design. Of what little industry standard software exists that was retrofitted for the iPad is very reduced in ability and power, and was made to accommodate on the go fixing and solutions, not to be a dedicated tool on its own. Much of the software that a graphic designer will need and use on the daily isn’t available for the iPad or any other such tablet. But at the end of the day they are still a tablet, and graphic design cannot realistically be pursued using a tablet due to its limitations. IPads are great, especially now that they have the M1 chips running them. Your going to want to get a laptop or a dedicated desktop.
